Natural paradise

Meise botanical gardens

Located on the Bouchout Domain in Meise, this impressive 92 hectare botanical garden is home to almost 18,000 species of plants from all over the world. You will also find Bouchout Castle there, which dates from the 19th century. In addition, the Domain offers a wonderful selection of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and annuals. The medicinal plant garden, the North American forest and the collection of Mediterranean plants are also worth a visit! In short, it is the perfect place for an instructive, unusual and relaxing walk. The botanical gardens are open all year round, each season having its own little treasures!

Historical city on the river Dijle

Mechelen

The people of Mechelen are super proud of their 300 listed buildings, three of which flaunt the UNESCO world heritage label: St Rumbold’s Tower, the Belfry of the Town Hall and the Large Beguinage. The city centre boasts no fewer than eight historic churches, each with its own distinctive style: large or small, Gothic or baroque, Rubens or Van Dyck.

In Mechelen everything’s within walking distance. As you wander along the narrow streets, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on historical buildings and on so many charming restaurants and cafés that you’ll wish you could eat your way through Mechelen! And for a while at least, you can switch off and quietly daydream, for the centre is pedestrianized.

I’m going on a city trip and I’m taking… the kids with me! Combine a spot of history with activities the whole family will warm to. You can visit one of the largest toy museums in Europe, experiment at Technopolis, walk among the penguins in Planckendael and discover the city’s most picturesque nooks on a children’s trail.

Port city on the Scheldt river

Antwerp

Museums, shops, architecture: whatever is on your city-trip checklist, Antwerp can offer, including a zoo. The Antwerp Zoo is one of Europe’s oldest and most attractive city zoos. And a beach: St Anneke, on the Left Bank. Not only the beach is pretty unique for a city inland, the city also boasts a deep sea port 80 km inland. As you can see, Antwerp does everything that little bit differently.

Beer Capital of Belgium

Leuven

The large population of students creates a young, vibrant atmosphere and a pleasant bustle in historic Leuven. Thanks to its university, Leuven is an innovative and conveniently located centre of knowledge, just a stone’s throw away from Brussels, the European capital, and Brussels Airport, at the intersection of two European motorways.

However, Leuven is also a mecca for gourmets and tourists who want to relax. A city where culture and creativity rule. A shopping centre for demanding shoppers. The magnificent town centre boasts wonderful monuments and a rich history as well as modern urban renewal projects. With authentic cafés and the finest restaurants. in short, a city to enjoy to which tourists gladly return.

Leuven is without any doubt the beer capital of the world. The city boasted over thirty breweries at the start of the 20th century. Most have disappeared, only Stella Artois brewery and Domus brewery keep the brewing tradition alive.
